The chapter was chartered on December 31, 1992 in LaPlace, LA, bringing the rich tradition of Service of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity programs and activities to the local community.

On the evening of November 17, 1911, Omega Psi Phi was founded inside the Science Building (later renamed Thirkield Hall) at Howard University located in Washington, D.C. The founders were three undergraduates — Edgar Amos Love, Oscar James Cooper and Frank Coleman. Joining them was their faculty adviser, Ernest Everett Just.

Today’s Black History Fact!!! Charles Follis was born in 1880 to Catherine and J. Henry Follis in Cloverdale, Virginia. In 1890 they moved to Wooster, Ohio. Charles excelled in baseball and track and field and in 1898 became the captain of the first Wooster High School football team. As Captain, Charles lead the team to two undefeated seasons and earned the nickname “The Black Cyclone”. While playing baseball for Wooster University, he played football for the Wooster Athletic Club. There, Charles faced the tough Shelby Athletic Club (later, the Shelby Blues) and owner Frank Schiffer. Schiffer offered Charles a job, and a place to live in Shelby, Ohio. Eventually, Charles was paid $10.00 per game as the star player of the Shelby Blues, a recognized professional team of the time, until 1906, when he retired from football due to injuries. While in Shelby, Charles’ ability and character impressed his teammate Branch Rickey. Charles Follis finished his pro sports career as a standout catcher and slugger for The Cuban Giants Negro League from Trenton, New Jersey, and sadly passed in 1910 after contracting pneumonia at the age of 30. He is buried in the Wooster Cemetery with his family. In 1947, as fan interest in Major League Baseball was waning, Branch Rickey (remembering his old teammate Charles Follis’ character and ability) signed Jackie Robinson to the Brooklyn Dodgers. This signing broke the race barrier, bringing an end to segregation in professional baseball. Charles’ story was featured in a play entitled “The Black Cyclone”, written and produced by Jim and Amy K. Stoner.

Shirley Chisholm Chisholm was outspoken and brave. Instead of accepting her seat on the Agriculture Committee—even though she represented people from a city—she complained to leaders until they reassigned her to an education committee. When she was blocked from television debates after she decided to run for president (the first African-American woman to do so), she sued. She fought for equal rights for women, minorities, immigrants, and the poor. Serving seven terms (14 years) in Congress, Chisholm helped open up opportunities for people like President Barack Obama and Senator Elizabeth Warren. But she said she didn’t want to be remembered as the first woman or African American to do something. She wanted to be remembered as someone who “had guts.” She died on January 1, 2005. Todays Black History Fact: Poet Melvin B. Tolson born in Moberly, Missouri, was a contemporary of the Harlem Renaissance and, although he was not a participant in it, his work reflects its influences. Liberia declared Tolson as its poet laureate in 1947.

Todays Black History Fact: Brother Robert H. Lawrence, Jr. made history in 1967 as the first African American selected as an astronaut, contributing to the Manned Orbiting Laboratory program before his promising career was tragically cut short in a jet crash later that year. Though his name remained largely unknown for decades, his legacy was finally recognized in 1997 when NASA honored him on the Astronauts Memorial Foundation’s Space Mirror, cementing his place among America’s space pioneers.

Today’s Black History fact features Tony Dungy, the first African American National Football League head coach to win the Super Bowl and Mrs. Rosa Parks considered the Mother of the modern day Civil Rights movement.

On this day in 1960, four black college students staged a sit-in at a whites-only lunch counter at Woolworth’s in Greensboro, NC. They sparked a national movement across the country. Instructions were simple: sit quietly and wait to be served. Via African Archives #BlackHistoryMonth

It was a busy weekend for the Phi Iota Iota chapter or Omega Psi Phi Fraternity INC. on Sunday, January 14, 2024 the chapter made its First Quarterly Church Service at Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church located in Reserve, Louisiana.
